The rule of thirds
Position of your subject within a picture is one of the most important decisions you make. Beginner photographers often make a mistake and position the subject right in the middle of the picture. More often than not these pictures are dull and uninteresting.
This is where the rule of thirds comes into play.
Before you take the picture, imagine your picture area divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically. Now put the center of interest at one of the four intersections of the imaginary lines that divide the picture. The option you select depends on the subject and how you would like that subject to be presented.
Your camera may have a grid you can turn on or off to use as a guideline. I would suggest using this function. It provides a huge help and constantly reminds you that you shouldn’t put the center of interest right in the middle of the photo.
Figure 1: Grid lines … Put the center of the interest where the lines cross.
But do keep in mind that every rule is meant to be broken. If you believe that you need to put your center of interest somewhere else to make that impact, be ready to do just that.
